About the band/artist
In January of 2008, musician and graduating ADMU law student Energyte Baldonado, came across a video performance of his sister’s friend, Mela Dua, a graduating nursing student at UST, singing during a birthday party. Coincidentally enough, he’s been scouting for members of a new band he’s trying to form, and after seeing the video, he decided that Mela can potentially fill in the spot for vocalist. He contacted her and set up an audition/jam session at Blue Light Studios, Kamuning, along with other possible band members. During the day of the audition, the guitarist Gyte invited didn’t show up. Mela then suggested that her boyfriend’s sister Zelle Lambert, a freshman Psychology student at DLSU, who happened to be there accompanying her, should try out for the spot.
After the audition, the confirmed members of the band except for the position of the drummer are Gyte (on lead guitar), Mela (keyboardist, vocalist), Zelle (rhythm guitar, keyboardist, vocalist), and Ems (bass). It was later on during their succeeding practices that Gyte brought along their new drummer, Marlon Castillo, also a graduating law student at ADMU.
The band, still unnamed at this point, randomly decided to be called “Something Else” when they were a few practices away from their first gig. Something Else debuted during the U.P. Fair 2008, performing cover songs.
A few months later, their bassist Ems and drummer Marlon, backed out from the band due to schedule and career conflicts. It was then that Marlon “Trini” Trinidad, a well-known “sessionista” who now works at Audiophile, and Monzito Purugganan, a law student at Arellano University, replaced them on bass and drums respectively.
The changes in their lineup led the band to decide to change their name as well. “Pandademic” was suggested by Mela and Zelle, because their musical influence will be pandemic in nature (hopefully), and they all liked pandas. And so the band was reborn and is now officially known as “Pandademic”
The band, now sharing a clearer musical vision, started to seriously tackle song writing at this time, working hard to infuse all their musical influences (punk, rock, funk, electronica, pop, blues) into one unique and appealing sound that is mostly grounded on the inadvertently, increasingly popular electronic genre. Electronic music is more popular in Western countries and in other parts of Asia than in the Philippines. Pandademic wishes to introduce this genre to the country and help fortify its beginning foundations in the Pinoy musical scene.
Pandademic debuted at Il Ponticello in Makati, performing both original and cover songs as the opening act for the band Overtone, every Thursday, all throughout the Month of August 2008.
Ever since then, the band has been working hard playing random gigs, acquiring new instruments and gadgets to achieve a better electronic sound, and writing and recording new songs.
